Go paperless? Not the GW magazine

Hello

My print subscription will run out soon, and I wanted to change to a paperless and seedless version.
My attempt to be environmental friendly seems to fail. I asked the GW magazine team and learned that paperless is indeed Smartphone/tablet only. I can't use the laptop, which is a no-go for me.
It looks to me that I have to give up the Gardeners World magazine (and forum) if I want to be environmental friendly.

I my garden.

  • That's a shame, but maybe a sign of the increasing use of handheld devices and decreasing use of laptops. It's probably not financially worth their while to develop a laptop version.

Why would you have to give up the forum as well? It's not for GW subscribers only.

I thought the problem through from a technical point, @NormandyLiz
My subject line is wrong: I'm not interested in the magazine, but the Gardeners World website. I don't read the magazine and hardly use the seeds, and always give both to a neighbour, but I do use the website. Much of the content is available with sign in only. And that is the problem. I use the plant descriptions, the videos, and the forum.
I would need access to those 3.
I want to pay for the use as the people behind them are paid for their work.

With my current print subscription, I can't renew to a digital subscription. It looks like I would have to wait until my print subscription ends and start a new digital subscription with a new forum account.

    I my garden.

Can't you just buy the annual digital access thing? It gives you full access to the website without having to have the magazine as far as I can see.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Given that Microsoft have a 70% market share in the Desktop operating system (OS) market its somewhat remiss of Gardner's world magazine management not to produce a Gardner's world magazine Microsoft Windows App for the Windows OS.

As I understand it the only bit of the website that isn’t accessible to non-subscribers is the Premium
content section .., the rest is freely available to all-comers. 😊

That is what I understood too, @Dovefromabove, though the magazine itself isn't part of the website and has to be paid for. I imagine the website and forum are paid for by the ads.

  • And I'll remind everyone who doesn't subscribe to GW Magazine, that your local library probably has a digital subscription you can access from home. I would recommend a Chromebook @Simone_in_Wiltshire as they can run Android apps on a laptop so you can actually read the magazine on the device of your preference (just choose one with a good screen in the more premium end). I use Pressreader on mine and it works really well, not as nice to read magazines even on the biggest phone screen.

@wild edges Many thanks, this hits the nail.
I actually thought I can only read the magazine on a tablet but have no access to gardenersworld.com

Don’t be surprised, it’s a habit of me to expect that everything is extremely complicated and don’t see the tree in the wood.

OH is the gadget/app one. No-one believes me that can only use the 📞 app and use the browser. Already downloading something to my phone fails.

Me too, @Simone_in_Wiltshire, I want the largest screen possible and a full sized keyboard. Who wants to see beautiful photos on a mobile phone screen?

You can also download and install the Android subsystem for windows and run android apps on a windows 10 machine .
