When we got married, a hover mower was on our wedding gift list. My best man bought us one, and even did the first cut for us.

It lasted the whole time we were at that house. It was a Flymo, and was great - although it didn't have a grass box.

When we moved, we kept it just for doing the drive. So it lasted about 20 years. It didn't create those lovely lines, but I didn't care much. Time was precious, and with both of us commuting to London, it was ideal.

Now I have a Bosch, which is a cylinder mower. Creates those lines I always craved. I use a strimmer for the drive.

But to answer your question, @B3 a hover mower does the job fine. I prefer one that has a spinning metal blade. Does the job well, and ideal for a quick and easy cut. I may revert to one, when our cylinder mower dies.

But get one with a grass box.

Thank you @rowlandscastle444. My husband is struggling a bit with our current mower. I thought the hover mower might be better. He likes his stripes but he'll have to do without if we get one. Didn't realise you could get them with grass collectors. I thought they just blew the grass everywhere.

  • Of course, if you have a long garden, you'll need an extension lead or three.
A hover mower is really best suited to a small lawn, close to the power supply.
If you have banking (not the financial kind), then one without a grass box is better.

Lawn is quite small but away from house. A one extension lead job.

One's with a grass box are naturally heavier. My neighbour has one, and mows his lawn fine.

I have got a battery Ryobi mower - 30cm think blade

Got it not long ago  does pretty good job, now once figured out the red thing next to battery has to be pushed in well to make work not a little as popped out

Have a few 4amp batteries so last longer  does really good has a grass cutter bag so can collect if you want - once the plastic thing stopping it collecting grass was out I collect it now
May be a little more money but can use in garden and on plot
Does cut pretty close to sides of things
It is light ish weight as we lift in an out of car - handle can fold down as well for storage
I got it on a deal with a strimmer - will try that soon as other strimmer still OK so still using that

We have a battery Flymo with collecting box.  Our front and back lawns are not large, maybe slightly smaller than average and one battery charge does one of them only.  Does a great job although spare batteries would be very helpful
