Has anybody been affected by the storms over the past couple of days?

I only realised how badly some places have been affected from seeing news reports today.  We had warnings of severe weather but didn't actually have anything more than a couple of hours of heavyish rain.

It thundered and very heavy rain in the night. The local ASDA is flooded with water and closed , the local Tesco is packed full of customers.  Cat came in wet through, now recovering on the front bed.

    Nope - no storms here.
The patio had a few damp patches this morning when I got up so must have had a shower overnight.
We had a few minutes of drizzle earlier and that's all the rain we've had in ages

  • I was woken by lightning and watched what was quite a spectacular show … but thankfully no damaging downpour such as some in the Somerset and Devon areas have had. 🤞

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • So much rain and so heavy. Flood alerts in our area again. Thunder but didn't see any lightening. The wind is very strong now so the work in the garden stops for yet another day.....but at the moment the sun is shining.

In the early hours, intense rain, very close lightning, and thunder that sounded as though it needed a giant dose of strepsils. I've never heard stuttering thunder before. It was scary, and I like thunderstorms. I thought everything in the garden would be wrecked but the dahlias are unscathed, the figs are unbruised, and the only sign of the storm is a path strewn with lethal conker shells.

We had a storm about 5 am, loud enough that it woke me, with heavy rain. By the time I went outside at about 9:30 there was 22 mm in the rain gauge but only a few puddles left on the ground. I didn't notice any damage.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • We had pretty continuous lightning every few seconds for over at hr from about 11 pm, with a constant thunder roll accompaniment and very heavy rain.  No chance of sleeping though it.

Now it is sunny and breezy, but strong winds are on the menu from early tomorrow for 36 hrs.  Gotta love the variety! 😉
  • Torrential rain, thunder/lightning in parts of Somerset.  Plenty of flood damage in some coastal villages too. Dryish at the moment but very strong winds.
At least no earthquakes/volcanic eruptions ( so far ) which is something to be grateful for.

Nothing much here yet, apart from a few extremely heavy showers, but bad wind & rain expected for the next two days. So I’ve postponed my click and collect food shop until Thursday and we’re going to hunker down. We’ll probably have a tree down that will block the lane leading to the house, as that is what has happened the last couple of times that we had weather like this when the leaves were still on the trees.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

  • Yes, caught in torrential downpours and strong winds, whilst travelling by car to see my parents in West Sussex. At one point a lorry travelling in the opposite direction, went through a deep puddle across the road. My nervous wife, who was driving, came to a grinding halt, as huge swathes of water washed right over the top of the car (a Honda Jazz).

My first concern was that the engine would be flooded. Thankfully, it was not.
My wife was a little more careful for the remainder of the journey. When she saw lorries, she kept her distance.

We had plenty of thunder and lightning last night, for a couple of hours. I had to smile, as my wife slept through it all.
