The saddest sound in the garden

  • We tend to give a surplus of whatever is a glut that year, to neighbours, and to people at our church - many of whom are there because they are short of money.

We don't sell stuff anymore. It's a hassle, and how does one work the income into your tax returns?

I live in a village like yours @BenCotto. Small village shop run by local folk, - open mornings only all through covid, never ran out of any supplies, one customer at a time. On the few times I haven't felt well a quick phone call down to the shop for supplies and someone arrives at my door after closing time with everything I need - and we are 2 miles from the village also with a very long and 'rough' driveway, plus the message is 'oh pay next time you are down'. Wonderful folk.
    Sorry, a bit off topic.

My sad sound in the garden is no sound at all from birds this year. Our neighbour looped his conifer hedge drastically ( it was big and he can't keep on top of it now he is older, which is understandable) last year and since then, the birds have disappeared...completely. No nesting places, no safety from predators now and despite my repeated attempts to entice the birds into the garden, they have abandoned our garden totally. It's sad to sit out now and hear nothing. We had a lovely blackbird who would always sit on top of the garage  and sing his heart on an evening, it was joyous to listen to. Now, deathly silence. Shame.

We have had so many swallows this year - clouds of them. They only managed one brood each this year, apart from one pair who did have two - cold wet July probably meant they couldn't feed them in the middle of summer - so there may be fewer next year. Our 'home' ones have gone now but we're still seeing loads on the wires and flying over the stream - on their way south from further north, we assume.  Our resident blackbirds fledged at least 2 babies
