Could it have been a decorative support for sweet peas or beans with the two prongs put in the ground and strings hung off the square frame for the climbers to grow up along?
Another possibility I wondered about was if it could also act if set up in a similar way as a support for netting to keep birds off fruit or frost protection material at the appropriate time of year? Just guessing really.
It would seem that there are several possible uses for this contraption, and if it had been designed and made to an individual's specification, then the true use may never be known.
My FIL was a welder/metalworker and you should see the stuff he knocks up for simple projects where anyone else would just tie a bunch of bamboo canes together.
The 'legs' on this are the same distance apart as the aperture of the square frame so that must be related somehow.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
