I used to have garden bonfires back in the day because they were an effective and also therapeutic means to dispose of garden waste. These days I don’t burn or otherwise dispose of 99% of organic garden waste because it all gets shredded and/or composted and goes back on the garden. The only stuff that goes in the council bin are weeds with seeds or mares tail roots.
I do however, like to have the occasional barbecue and the occasional small fire in my fire basket while having a few beers with my pals. I only burn clean wood and it’s all pretty minimal. I’m not irresponsible nor am I anti social. As it happens I often don’t need a fire because the incessant flaring from the big petro-chemical plant 4 1/2 miles from my house lights the garden up on a regular basis. No exaggeration.
Ineos and other billionaire owned corporations aside, inconsiderate people abound and they should be dealt with accordingly. I imagine the plastic burning folk, smoking the place out are the same ones who emerge into the light, blinking like pit ponies, on the first nice day in summer every year to give us all the benefit of their superb music taste by playing it outside at full blast.
My bugbear however is, when there’s a knee jerk desire to legislate everybody down to the same level as the stupidest, most antisocial, criminal person in society. Look at UK knife laws for example. Also where does it end? I hear the term eco-fascism being used a lot these days and it seems to be on the rise. In future you can no longer, for example, have a barbecue in your garden, what is it going to be next week? You’re driving the wrong car? You complete and utter git!
There’s a big rise in the keyboard warrior types these days. At what point did so many people become so positive about everything? It used to be called single issue politics, now it’s identity politics and it’s relatively easy for our lords and masters to ignore or when it suits, actually cause. We fall out about pollution from barbecues, diverted into self righteous indignation at our fellow citizens while our governments sit smugly back and do sweet FA to actually tackle climate change.
Anyhoo, I come here for the gardening not to unleash my “Irate from Tunbridge Wells” so I’ll leave you with this quote from Bertrand Russell:
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.”
I’ll leave it to the hardy souls who’ve made it this far to decide where or even if if they fit into that.
Thank you for taking the time to write, @DaveGreig and I have sympathy for some of what you say. There is quite a bit to unpick there. I sometimes think that thoughtless people ruin things for others who are not thoughtless - which I think is one of your points. I think I understand the gist of what you are saying. My feeling is that because not all people cannot be relied upon to be thoughtful, governmental intervention could help in leading the way...to protect the vulnerable etc. I could say more, but i will leave it at that.
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
Doh! Just to point out my typo above.
