Gravelled garden

Hi I recently put gravel on a large area and despite looking lovely I now have a strong grass coming up andas I pull it out new grass appears.  Can I leave it to grow as grass on top of the gravel which is quickly getting covered.  Will I be able to mow it into a lawn eventually.  Thank you

  • Depends on what preparation you did on the ground before you put the gravel down.  If it was previously grass and you didn't remove it, then not surprising it will grow thru the gravel.
If you decide to leave the grass to grow and become a "lawn", I'm not sure whether a mower would be happy about the remaining gravel ?
Several expert lawn people on here so hopefully someone will be along soon to advise you  :)
  • Thank you Phillips.  I had it done so called professionally.  A membrane was put down first, then lots of gravel and for some time it looked very nice, then this very strong course grass started to pop up.  I no sooner removed it and it came tnicker and stronger.  I thought I would leave it and let it take its course, but then I worry about cutting it.  I was thinking I will take a chance .
  • If it has been done recently and the contractor hasn’t disappeared 🤨, I’d get in touch and have a diplomatic word!  The ground was either not prepared properly or the weed suppressing membrane was inadequate.  A difficult situation for you but good luck!

Of course the grass could have seeded in from above.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • @joanrayers89287  Perhaps @MrMow will see this and be able to advise - he knows about grass.
As for the "name change" the A and S are too close together IMO  :D
  • I only use weedkiller on things that grow between slabs, and other areas i can't dig out.
If i had a gravel garden, i wouldn't feel guilty about using weedkiller on things that spoiled the look of my garden.
