Trees for Driveway

I was planning on planting 3 different trees along a driveway

Acer Autumn Blaze
Acer Emerald Queen
White birch

Anyone ever put these 3 together? Would they go?

Hello @alastair_19, each of the trees you have mentioned has its own distinctive beauty so I personally wouldn't worry about whether they 'go together' or not. If you like them just go for it.

  • They range in height and spread so if you are not looking for uniformity and have space and suitable soil, aspect and climate, they are all beautiful trees.

  • My thought is that, in my experience, acers and silver birch prefer different situations … most acers preferring sheltered spots with some shade, and moist soil … whereas the silver birches I know like light well-drained soil and are happiest in sunny positions.

The most important thing will be having enough room for them, and the right conditions as @Plantminded indicates, so that they're habit isn't compromised. Good prep is always needed before planting.
Birches grow everywhere here @Dovefromabove - including quite serious shade. They're one of our most common woodland trees too .  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • We have birches in all sorts of situations here too, open spaces and woodland but they do seem to enjoy sandy soil as @Dovefromabove says.  They don't like hot, humid situations though:

  • White birches do look absolutely lovely in groups.  I would love a driveway planted with them ... and I would pop acers elsewhere.  :)
  • Certainly around here we see birches on the Breckland and heathland … I’ve not seen many around the Broads.
    😊

I fancied a row of different varieties of liquidambar going down my drive, but the cost of about 15 trees put me off
    Devon.
  • I have an inkling I'm in charge of a slightly more modest plot than the norm round here!  :D
  • Thanks all for your thoughts. Do the white birch give much autumn colour? I do like some colour in the autumn
