Cosmos

Hi there. Got lovely very tall cosmos no flowers at all apart from a few at the end of them. Driving me mad so tall and bushy. How do I send picture. How do I find your reply as you don't ask for email address?

Hi @sheila.bullock283v_8nFP1y - in the line of icons above the  posting space, there's one which looks like hills and a moon/sun. That's the one for photos. If you can keep them small that helps for uploading - around 1MB or less is ideal.
As far as seeing replies, some people use the notifications method, so if you use that, and if they put the '@' symbol and then click on your name so that it appears in pink in their reply, that will notify you.
Alternatively, you can bookmark the thread and just look at it each day. The little star icon at the top right of the page, next to the new discussion tab, is that one. It turns green when you click on it, and you'll then see it in the list on the right which says Quick Links.  :)

If you haven't pinched out your cosmos when they're younger, they can sometimes get very tall , especially if they're in quite rich soil, and not really flower until this time of year   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

@sheila.bullock283v_8nFP1y Some types of Cosmos do spend the season growing and flower in the Autumn. Do you have a named variety?

Best ones I ever saw for massive of flowers were growing in very neglected, poor dry ground, in full sun.
Maybe we are just treating them too well with rich soil kept moist?

Pinching out the tops when they are young plants tends to give a well branched plant, with more flowers.
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • Crumbs did not do that but some at end more in the sun are OK. So annoying first time grown from seed local garden centre say try f1 seeds next time though first effort not bad they are so tall and bushy very fed up
  • So the bought ones had had tops pinched out before selling. Very fed up. How do I pinch the top out? Stupid question btw.

All part of the joys of gardening @sheila.bullock283v_8nFP1y  :)

Orange cosmos from seeds supplied by a kind forum member are putting on a fine show in the ground.
"Rubenza" in a pot are just getting going, but "Cupcake blush" also in a pot did nothing.

When Cosmos first became popular years ago ,varieties such as "Seashell" did really well for me, but over the years all cosmos don't seem to do as well as they used to.

There used to be only 3 or 4 varieties back in the day, now there are so many. Maybe they have been overbred, if that's a word.

  • First time grown from seed b and q.
  • Got few pink ones coming out at the end. Pity can't send pic on here
  • Nope lost me
