I take my thyroxine tablets with a drink of water as soon as I wake in the morning … usually at least half an hour before my first coffee arrives. I’ve been doing that for about twenty years … seems to work for me. 😊
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Gosh, this thread is fascinating, thanks @BenCotto and other contributors. Interesting to see the different opinions though. I might try taking the lansoprazole just before bed as it would be far more convenient to do so then.
Of course I agree with Punkdoc, empty stomach is first thing in the morning, orange juice yes, because you need to aid absorbing with the vit c(that's why you shouldn't drink tea with a meal) but yes iron can upset your gut.
An hour, give or talk. So you could allow a little longer to be sure. It takes longer than that to completely digest the food, but the digestion is taking place in the small intestine after an hour, not the stomach.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.
I'm sorry but that is just not true. Consider how long you have to starve before a general anaesthetic, and that gives you a fairly clear picture of how long stomach emptying takes. 6 hours is the answer.

Snap @Ergates. But I don't take it when I get up in the night - always the first thing I do after waking, with the glass of water that is there for the tablets I take when I get into bed!
@BenCotto Taking iron tablets on empty stomach will cause severe stomach issues after s short while. Having said that out of experience, they also will cause the other side effect what we have to do once a day. Please to fidgesbone. Your doctor obviously never had to take them.
The NHS website (where I should have looked in the first place) says “ Ferrous sulfate works best when you take it on an empty stomach. If you can, take it 30 minutes before eating, or 2 hours after eating. But if it upsets your stomach, you can take it with or after food.”
It adds that the 30 minute pause before eating should be expanded to two hours if taking tea, coffee, dairy products or iron rich foods.
Everyone’s an expert, soon there will be no need for drs., which is good, because there probably won’t be any. I am amazed at the amount of utter nonsense is spouted about medical matters on here.
