    I understand that the stems are only colourful if pruned back each year.
  • That is correct. Prune in Spring, enjoy the foliage in Summer, marvel at the bare stems in Winter, prune again the following Spring.

    If you miss a year of pruning the winter stems are still colourful - just not quite as bright as they could be. I only cut back between a third and a half of Midwinter fire anyway. Always understood that it isn't quite as tolerant of a really hard cut back as other cornuses.
