I too had assumed, from the info given, that your tree was now pear-less … it now seems that your tree still has twice as many as mine bore last year. 👍

Perhaps the answer is that, despite you having thinned the fruit, your tree ‘decided’ that it could not bring all the remaining fruit to fruition and dropped some more … initially you didn’t notice that they’d fallen and before you did they were borne away in the night by voles to add to their pantry.

    😊

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • The most plausible explanation under the assumption that there are voles or something similar in my enclosed urban (not particularly wild) garden.

Thank you and hope we both might get a better crop next year  :)
  • No garden is totally devoid of wildlife. Even if you never happen to actually see any. Even if nothing has set up home on your patch, you can be sure something has moved in next door or next door but one etc. where there is less gardening activity. Going under or over fences does not deter critters.
I never see live badgers, rarely see deer, foxes or rabbits but I know they are close by. My cat brings home a selection of small brown furries which I never see running around live and on one occasion was treated to spotting a Common Brown Lizard on one of my banks. Never seen before, never seen since.
It is unwise to dismiss what might be visiting your garden.
