Aldi not selling plants any more

I noticed my nearest three Aldi stores are not selling plants any more.  I've always been in too much of a hurry to ask the staff why not. DAEK if this is a storewide policy? They used to have some excellent plants.

Ours still has plants. Nothing that I'm tempted to buy though.

Local one has some plants. I bought a clematis. They also had some straggly looking pansies or violas. I didn't look that closely.

Ten years ago both Aldi and Lidl regularly had fruit trees and bushes for sale which didn't seem to sell particularly well as after a month or so they still had quite a few left, I wondered at the time how long they would stock these trees as they always had a surplus but it was an annual thing for several years until they stopped stocking them four or five years ago. I have two apple and one pear tree bought from Aldi at the time which have been very successfully growing and fruiting for six or seven years now which isn't too bad for an initial outlay of around £12.

One of our local Aldi stores (we have 3 !) has a good selection and they are popular on day 1.  After that they deteriorate quickly because they aren’t watered, nobody buys them and they end up in a skip.
  • I think it must be my local Aldis have stopped selling them because nobody was buying. Loads of stuff used to die un-watered on the shelves outside.
  • The last time I was at ALDI near here they had plants for sale but no prices on them which for me is a reason not to think about buying them. They also had no price on the compost and for this reason I will be getting some in Lidl instead. The annual bare root fruit tree selection seems to have stopped here as well but from what I could see they did seem to sell out so not sure why they finished doing this.
    Happy gardening!
  • I have had some nice and unusual plants from Aldi - an Osmanthus Delavayi for example.
  • Im based in London and my local Aldis never have any plants  :(

Our local Aldi is very close to a B&Q. Maybe the manager thinks providing a few plants is worth a punt.
