Magnolia Tree

Hi Everyone,

I bought a magnolia tree from gardening express back in April and it came with one tiny leaf. Several weeks after planting it the leaf started to shed. Does this mean the tree is dead or just settling for next year?

Welcome to the forum.

Plants need to photosynthesise in order to live and they can't do that without leaves. That suggests that your tree is dead or at least well on the way to being dead but just to make sure, do a scratch test. This will tell you how. https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/trees/why-tree-shrub-died

Unfortunately Gardening Express is know for shoddy goods, chance are it’s dead.

They do seem to have sent out a load of dead magnolias recently.

Thank you so much Ceres. I did a scratch test on the top branches and they look a bit green and on the main body which looks fresh and green. So assuming the branches might not survive but the actual tree is fine? Because the lower part closer to the root looked fresh and green.
