Rosa Rugosa Alba

dappledshadedappledshade Posts: 1,017
Hello hello to all, after a long time 👋🏼

I planted my rugosa last spring, it didn’t do much in its first year, mainly establishing itself but this year is glorious (about 5ft), super healthy and filling out its spot.
It’s in full sun, with good, free draining earth, yet it has zero buds.
Does the old rose advice ‘first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap’ also apply to rugosas, or does it bloom in July even?
I mulched with manure (like I do with all my roses) in early spring, nothing since.
Any advice much appreciated 🙏🏻

Sorry about lack of photo, but I’m at work.
  • I bought Rosa Rugosa Alba in a 2L pot back in July 2021. I did get a couple of flowers that year but it flowered last year no problem and is currently showing some buds. Not so sure about the old saying about roses, rugosa (at least mine) seems to be permanently leaping. I see new suckers every other day.

    Thanks!
Mine is romping away as well, with new suckers along the bed it’s planted in, but I can’t see any flower buds yet. I’m in north London. Whereabouts are you, out of interest? Maybe I just need to be patient…
  • I'm in Leicester. Don't know what the weather's been like round your way but we've had a combination of a lot of sun and some heavy rain.

Ours has been flower here in norwich for a couple of months now. It had a few blooms earlier in the year but has recently had more. We are on poor sandy soil and it's not a prolific bloomer for us and it took quite a few years to get going.
I planted another last year and we didn't have any blooms last year but had a couple earlier on in the year this year. It's growing strongly and is in better soil bit I can't see any signs of new buds. A neighbour has a hedge of them and they have been blooming on and off like our maturer one but again there haven't been masses of blooms.

I grow the pink form. It has to be pruned fairly hard in early spring or it would be too big for it's space. The result is no flowers in some years but glorious large leaves. This year I do have more flowers so more hips too. It has done well I think it maybe rain in the spring which has helped.

Thanks - maybe mine is a slow bloomer well. Will keep fingers crossed!

@thevictorian I had no idea about suckers when I bought it (my bad, didn’t do enough research) so I’m a bit nervous it’ll swap the bed now…will have to keep it in check. Do you cut out the unwanted suckers in spring? Thanks.

I wouldn't expect a lot of flowers with a hedge as pruning in spring stops flowering.
