Cherry tree plans.

I'm going to plant one!

Cherries are BY FAR the best fruit but also by far the rarest and most expensive so I'm going to supply my own to myself. There will be no sharing. I'm going for Stella on G5. What say you experts?

I'm going to plant blackcurrants too but I'm less sure about those. What are the best ones for good cropping and maybe jam...with scones and cream?

  • Knowing no better, at the time, we bought Stella on Colt. Great fruit but really needs a much more dwarf rooting stock. I wish you luck and don't forget to net it.

  • All I will say is good luck getting them before the birds do.

Good luck! We bought three cherry trees (including a Stella) a couple of years ago... last year the pigeons ate all the new leaves, this year we netted them, and when we removed the netting we found they had been harbouring black fly infestations... they are still alive, but look very sorry for themselves! They are now festooned with silver ribbon, and so far the pidgies have left them alone. But I'm sure it won't last long...

Ha Ha!   I planted 2 cherry trees years ago, one with big red cherries, the other with red and yellow ones. Never thought of rootstocks They grew tall, needed a ladder to pick the cherries, the few left by the birds. News got round, all the jays and blackbirds swooped in. I hung CDs and paper foil on the trees. The birds perched on the CDs.

Moved house, thought hurray there are cherry trees. 2021 and 2022 they were covered in blossom. Huge frost, no cherries. There have been some cherries this year but turned out 2 of the trees were cooking cherries. Other tree is tall and the birds moved in.

That is why cherries are expensive.

Net your Cherry tree before any fruit appears. Left it too late and birds sole all my small green fruit as well as enjoying the new growth on the tips of the branches. Moved house and never planted another.
