FOR ALL NEW GARDENERS

GardenerSuzeGardenerSuze Posts: 5,692
In a few weeks I will offically be an OAP. My career has been in gardening and the forming of a gardening club approaching it's thirtieth year. The two have been my life, I have been privileged .

For me, as I retire, I wanted to share the knowlege kindly past to me over the years. So I joined the forum. I am always learning something new and getting things wrong, others will kindly put me right, always very important.

So please go ahead and ask, as it works two ways you have answers from talented and knowledge gardeners and in return their 'gift' of helping you makes them happy too.
Occasionally you may not get a reply but it is often because your post has puzzled everyone!
No question is a silly one and kindness is the overwelming response you will receive.

These thoughts do not come from sentiment but an overwhelming need to share.  We all have an understanding of our world and gardening with all it's diversities is a great place to make a practical difference.

I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

And bump it up if no replies after a couple of days. Sometimes, iwn a busy day, posts sink down the pages into oblivion fairly quickly.

In a few weeks I will officially be an OAP.

    So will I.

I have mixed emotions about it.
Looking forward to getting my pension.
Not looking forward to getting even older..... - but better than the alternative 😊

I got here ahead of you … it’s not too bad … so far… the one thing I’m a bit peeved about is that the government doesn’t pay double time for bank holidays 🙄

Congrats in advance on your new OAP status @GardenerSuze.  I'm sure your clients were sorry to lose you when you retired but you certainly continue to pass on your knowledge and experience via this forum  :):)

Thankyou all for your replies. Guess as I am officially retiring I should be looking for a new hobby. I must give it some thought what is the most popular hobby in the UK could be gardening? A new poll suggests upcycling, sounds like fun.

I got there this year too @GardenerSuze, don’t worry, you’ll cope! I prefer the term pensioner, you can keep the o and the a!  It’s been a pleasure reading your posts over the last two years and learning from your experience, thank you for your regular contributions and insights.  Enjoy your official retirement!

@Plantminded With the chance of a move and a new garden too I feel renewed! I am  a fan of your posts always interesting and explained really well.. From bamboo to grasses and help with house plants. Thankyou.

Our local garden club organised holidays/ trips/ talks and socials for many years. More recently things have obviously been more difficult. There are still new members but the younger generation are tied with jobs/ children etc. Most turn to the internet for garden questions. This forum needs to be and is an important resource for them.

I've been gardening for 50 years - how did I get to be this age so fast? I was 21 when I started. Enjoy your retirement @GardenerSuze.

I have enjoyed this forum, most people here are lovely, just occasionally less so. I hope new gardeners here won't be put off by a less so. It's great to know there are so many people out there with the same interest as me.

@Busy-Lizzie I used to help in a school where they had a small veg garden. It was great to see how engaged the children were, especially when planting something new.
One child showed me a cougette and said with pride" look at this cucumber"! It made me realise the importance of sharing our garden knowledge.
