tomato help

Hi all first time tomato grower here, I planted two varieties from seed with my kids. Marmande (Determinate) and F1 Sungold issue i am having is that when we potted them on we lost track of which was which. My understanding is that the marmandes' being determinates do not require any pinching where as the sungolds do. i have not been pinching any as i do not want to impact the growth of the marmande but feel that the plants are growing all over the place. I wanted to know what would be the best strategy going forward being that I am unable to determine which plants are which but still want to get a decent yield for the kids and I.

i have attached some pics.

thaks in advance

The Marmande tomatoes will need a support as they are quite large and heavy!

Thank you both for your help and suggestions. Tbh I have looked closely at the leaves on all plants and am struggling to discern much difference. This may be down to the fact that we planted the strongest and largest of the plants and gave the rest away so they may all be marmande. To stay on the safe side, would it be detrimental if I just started pinching side shoots from now? Even though marmande are determinate?

    Thank you

How many plants do you have - is it just one of each? I grow Sungold, but I'd have to go and look closely to see what they're like compared to your plants. The last pic looks slightly different from the others though.
If there's only 2, and there's room , you could just leave both. If you think they're both the same, you could pinch out one and leave the other. It won't make a huge difference, and you'll still get a good crop - they certainly look nice and healthy. Any side shoots you pinch out can be potted up too, and that will give you another plant, albeit later, but you should still get some fruit, and it could always come under cover later on.
The one in the 2nd pic is about to flower, so you could wait and see what happens when the fruits appear, and take a view on it from that.
What I'd certainly do is get some supports in now, so that they won't get damaged by any bad weather.  :)

Ah - just had a lightbulb moment!
What do the flowers look like?
I've not grown Marmande, but I have grown other similar large fruited varieties.
I've always noticed that plants that produce large fruits have double flowers.
Those that produce normal or cherry tomatoes have single flowers.

Think you've nailed it @Pete.8. The flowers in your first pic certainly don't look like the ones in @darrencnel's  :)
Sungolds just look like standard little single yellow flowers, and the first three pix look like that.

@fairygirl and @pete thank you so much for all your help. I have had a look at them just now, there is 7 in total. 4 are showing single flowers and 1 is showing double flowers with the remaining 2 due to open. Had me thrown as I was convinced the single flower would be the marmande as they are the biggest and strongest ATM. I will stake them all and start pinching the sungolds. I may have to move a few to pots as the space is starting to look a bit tight.

    Thanks again

The main thing to remember next year is - get them labelled   ;)

We've all been there at some point with labelling, but it's harder when you have to do different processes for some plants. Either way, you're going to get plenty of fruits, so enjoy them  :)
The sungolds will certainly be fine in pots too. I only grow cherry/plum toms as I don't have room for bigger toms, and we like the small ones anyway, but they're very happy in pots.

  • Sorry to add another layer of confusion, but I largely pinch out my marmande, as I'm looking for fewer larger fruit, and I largely don't pinch out my Sungold as the plant can happily support a great number of stems and fruit ...
