    The first identifications are probably correct.  My first thought was Camellia.  The scent should be a decider.

    Your fingers I identified as camellia stems - not bad, huh?
     location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

    Mystery plant appears to have opposite leaves...so does Philadelphus.
    Camellia leaves are alternate.
