Can anyone identify this very large bush/tree I found in Threave Garden in Kirkcudbright. Has lovely white flowers and underneath the flower head dark purple stems. A beautiful bush. Thank you.

It is Philadelphus sp or named cultivar.
Maybe Philadelphus purpurascens?

I just love Kirkcudbright...once had a holiday there and visit all the fabulous gardens in Dumfries and Galloway..inc Logan botanic etc.

Yes love Broughton House! Visited it a couple of times. It has a beautiful garden - a little oasis going down to the sea. If you like cottage plants then next time you are in Kirkcudbright visit Ellenbank Nursery. Elizabeth McGregor has won many gold medals for her plants. Went there yesterday too and bought lots of plants

You didn't clarify which garden the Philadelphus was in Broughton or Threave.
Kirkcudbright or Castle Douglas?

Sorry that particular plant was at Threave. After seeing the garden at Broughton I bought several of the plants seen there from Elizabeth McGregor and all have done well. Living in the West of Scotland I quite like to buy plants from local nurseries rather than brought in from further south as our climate is more harsh - well usually that is! For the last week Glasgow has been the highest temperature in Uk - very unusual 😎😎

How far are you from Uplawmoor [Ayrshire] @sunshine in the garden? They are a huge, established nursery who supply all sorts of outlets around the country. I regularly use them for all sorts of plants, and have done for a long time, and prices are very low compared to GCs - for obvious reasons.

Is that McLaren Nursery Fairygirl ? I am in Ayr and have visited McLaren’s. It covers such a huge area you need a good few hours to go round it. 🤣 but yes I agree with you plants are good and at a good price!
