Pea Plants not flowering

Hi all, I have not been on here for some time owing to serious health problems among others but am getting back to some gardening again. I sowed some peas and they have grown well & are now about 3/4 meter high. Plants are looking very healthy but not a sign of any flowers. Any ideas why? John H

I just remembered having a similar problem with aubergines a few years ago, contacted Thompson & Morgan who supplied the seed and they suggested I put a spoonful of Epsom salts in a watering can, fill it up & water the plants with that. It worked like a dream so I have just done the same with the peas - I will have to wait and see but will post results if any on here. John H

will do dove, it occurs to me there might be others with a similar problem. This year has been bad for the garden in Bristol. I think the very severe frosts last winter killed a lot of plants off. We have(had) a Passiflora grown from a cutting taken over 40 years ago. This year it has died! John H

Sorry to hear that John.  It’s been an odd 12 months it’s true.  But you know, every plant lost is a new planting opportunity … a trip to the nursery/garden centre beckons methinks 😉

Yes Dove we have already prepared the ground and put in 2 Clematis in the place of the Passiflora. It’s meant Eileen has had to do most of the prep as I am still recovering from having a heart pacemaker plus surgery to a broken ankle. John H

Sorry to hear you've been unwell @John Harding. It crossed my mind a while ago that you hadn't been posting, but sometimes people just leave the forum, so we don't always know if there's a reason. Hope you're well on the mend now.  :)
You don't do things by halves do you?    ;)

No idea why your peas are stalling, but probably just that hit and miss weather, so fingers crossed they get spurred into action soon.
Some things are slower/later here, but all the trees were earlier than usual because the mild weather early in the year got them going, and the cold spell again in March was too late to hold them back. All very weird.
Now it's been like summer here for weeks....I keep thinking it's about late July!
Good luck with the new clems too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • what variety of pea are they and when did you plant them?

Peas are ‘The Alderman’ sown 06th April in greenhouse then pricked out into a raised bed when big enough to handle. I also sowed a few Hurst Greenshaft in the same bed. They are all growing well but as yet no flowers! John H

Hi Fairygirl, thank you for your thought. I always get a bit mixed up when I see your posts as my younger sister was nicknamed ‘Fairydoll’ by my Dad and the name has stuck with me all through my life 😀. John H

I think you’re in the Bristol area John?  What’s the weather been like … it’s been a bit duller and cooler than average here.
