Nepeta

ShepsSheps Posts: 2,236
Morning all... from being a member of this forum I have learnt that cats like Nepeta but, just how much do they like Nepeta?

I'm seriously considering planting one of the smaller types, along with Geranium Rozanne in the pots around the greenhouse.

So, am I going to be plagued by all the local cats once they get a whiff?

Depends on the cat. NDN's cat didn't touch my nepeta but then it died and she got another cat which almost destroyed it. I have put an upside down metal hanging basket over it.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I bought some as a deterrent for the neighbourhood cats hoping they'd get high on it and forget crapping in the raised beds. Got demolished within a week. Our cat gave it a sniff and then toddled on 🤷‍♀️

Thanks everyone... I know that some cats like it and like to be close to it.

It's good to hear that not all cats go nuts for it but, I know my luck and it would drive me crazy finding a pride camping outside the greenhouse, then again it might deter the 6 Collard Doves, 4 Feral Pigeons and 2 Wood Pigeons from popping all over the garden.

    I suppose it's worth a try 🙂

Thanks @Athelas that's encouraging and your Nepeta looks so good.

I grow Six Hills Giant and never had a cat interested in it as far as I can tell. Maybe they give it a sniff but I don't think it attracts them and I've never had any damaged by cats rolling in it or anything. I think it needs to be dried and crushed up for them but I've never tried it.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

It's a shame you're not local. I took loads of cuttings thinking mine wouldn't survive the winter but all the plants have come back strong and now I've got pots of the stuff that I need to get rid of.

Our car might have a nibble now and then, but not too fussed on it. Not
Other cats go for it, but then ours is always watching ......  :D
