Is this obelisk really so ugly?

Your rose is still small so I would concentrate more on seeing how it grows this season and enjoying it, making sure it's fed and watered as needed and trained or tied in to your obelisk.   You can then decide about a new support or moving the plant to a better place, if needed, in the autumn.

Unfortunately nurseries tell you what you want to hear to sell roses. Personally I think the space is too narrow between your door and the window for it, even with a trellis and training it up over and above your door and window on wires, you might still be fighting it to get out or see out. I bet the person with it in your last photo even with more space to play with is constantly having to chop it back.

Don't worry about it now, your rose will be ok for a couple of years, then you will need to sort something out.. it's a beautiful rose and will look good on your rust obelisk in the short term.. I don't want your neighbour, etc. to have the last laugh, when they see it demolished by this..
..this is only showing about half the plant.. after about 5 years..

..first year.. just lovely.. but you can see it wants to get wide..

..2nd year, still good, but by the end of year 2 it will start to show what it can do..

..by year 3 you will either have to keep chopping it back, which will ruin it in my opinion, or find some alternative support.. as you can see from the photos you've posted, that cannot be accommodated on a narrow 1.7m obelisk..

Just enjoy it for now and worry about it later..

@RubyRoss stop worrying about other people's opinions.  If you like it that's all that matters.

Thanks so much for sharing your photos - your rose looks great. I care much more about the rose than the obelisk so now I know what I need to plan for

@Marlorena, I don't know about RubyRoss, but you've frightened me! My CdF is just about to flower for the first time and I can't wait. I think I've allowed enough space at about 4 metres wide to the left and 2 metres to the right, total height about 3 metres. If it gets that high then it could always ramble over NDN's overgrown bushes!

That should be do-able for you, quite comfortably... I cut mine back from 20 feet width, to about 10 feet,  by the same height, as I felt I was losing control of it at the time.. I just like monster roses..
It takes a few years as it's quite slow at first, Ruby will be pleased to know..

I don't mind certain rusty objects, but your obelisk isn't my cuppa tea - I like the shape though, and I'll probably like it more when the roses are higher up it. I echo the sentiments of people who say, as long as you like it, stuff anyone else!

    Thanks @Marlorena, that's reassuring.
