Salvia microphylla and greggii

clematisdorsetclematisdorset Posts: 1,348
I have ordered some of these salvia. They will be arriving in 9 cm pots, and I understand they will be delivered to me within 5 to 20 days' time. Does anyone know if they are likely to arrive 1. Flowering or about to flower or 2. Deadheaded/trimmed ready for autumn flowering or 3. Other.

I am hoping it will be number one, but what are the chances, given they should be posted to me anytime from this week to about 16 June.

I am desperate for more colour in the garden and bees and butterflies!

My Gregii types have just been cut back by half -ish… they’ve been in leaf for about 2-3 weeks … however I expect flowers to appear by the end of June-ish and continue (covered with bees) until the frosts. 😊

Did you order them from the RHS magazine offer? I was thinking about getting them.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Thanks @dovefromabove, that sounds good. I know sometimes plants grown in protected areas in nurseries are a bit ahead. There are some plants in nearby gardens in full flower (well established plants).

Oh I missed that offer @b3. RHS says 5-7 working days which is good. Mine are coming from Norfolk Herbs & also Proctor's Nursery in Staffordshire - the chap from the latter was interviewed at RHS Chelsea. Think he was the one talking about the Ladybird poppy re a colour clash of something! Apparently the delivery delays are because of Bank Holidays and Garden shows!

The RHS ones are from Hayloft. I don't know if that's good or bad😊

I have 5 of various types, they are all in flower, but I don't think you should expect too much from 9cm pots, that's very small, but you might see a flower or two.. I hope so..

All these are flowering in my garden, in case you have ordered any.. most were planted early Spring, so they are not large plants..

gregii 'Royal Bumble'.. this overwintered without protection..

    microphylla 'Delice Feline'

microphylla 'La Mancha' just starting to open..

jamensis 'Nachtvlinder'  a sprawly plant, I think best grown in a pot..

jamensis 'Blue Merced' just started to flower..

I usually pot them on into slightly larger pots before finally planting them out. l find the roots fill the new pot very quickly and they are then bigger plants which go on to flower like crazy.
In my experience you could plant them out straight away but they take longer to establish. They will flower this year though.

As the weather was so chilly this year, l never got round to cutting mine back. Next thing l know they're starting to flower.  I might have to consider a "Hampton Hack".

Oh thanks @b3, Hayloft has excellent reviews, I will consider their shop for something later. The only thing is they are offering the small 9 cm pots just like most other places. Maybe later in to the summer, there will be more plants in 2 litre plus pots. I think Crocus is offering a  few at 2 litres now, but not the ones I am after ( I am looking for red, blue, orange).

Thank you @Marlorena, they are gorgeous. I was looking for red, blue and orange but in addition, I have to say I do like the intense colour of your Jamensis 'Nachtvlinder very much too. I hope I can get the plants to grow when they arrive. My garden is very green, with pockets of blue and white and I feel colourful salvia would make it zing just enough before my roses hopefully flower. I will be prepared to be underwhelmed this year and maybe next year will find they might  grow on to make a bigger, more colourful impression!

Thankyou @AnniD, Yes, I was thinking of potting them on for a bit before planting in final positions. In fact, some might stay in pots but submerged in the ground. I think I ordered a few which are definitely not on the hardy side of things. I am glad you think the plants should flower this year.

Yes, the chilly weather has been so strange. It feels as though spring arrived in the middle of winter almost and there was no obvious time when cutting back seemed sensible. Is the Hampton Hack similar to the Chelsea Chop but more extreme! :)  Maybe I will do the Dorset Dice!
