I have planted 16 cosmos Antiquity (grown from seed) in a 46cm diameter pot. Not sure if that's cramming or not, we'll see! Love the variety of colours that come with Antiquity ... no flowers as yet on mine, but here's a pic of some I grew last year...
The main thing to remember is that, if you pinch them out, they're bushier, and therefore each plant will take up more room. That can also affect the airflow around the plants, so you'd need fewer in a pot than if they were just left to grow to ensure they stayed healthy.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Towards the end of last night's Chelsea coverage, Monty advised "Cramming Cosmos into a large pot" to give a good show. Has anyone ever tried this, and if so how successful was it ? What was the "cramming" distance ?
By sheer coincidence I did it last year. I had a couple of well grown Vib.Bon. so planted them in large pots with pink cosmos around them. I put eight pink cosmos around the Vib. Bon., so was planning to put a clump of 5 white cosmos in the centre of this years pots with the white nigella planted in clumps around the outside of them. I was very happy with the effect last year.
Last year I bought dwarf cosmos seed to direct-sow at the front of a perennial bed that hasn't quite filled out. Then they ended up 4' tall! But they did well and were pretty so I bought a regular-height cosmos seed blend to fill in this year at the backs of the beds. None of them have gotten over a foot tall yet. I'll get it right one day!
