My recently planted "buzz" has it as has a mature buddleia several miles away. I've taken to picking off the affected leaves of mine.

@dangermousie thank you that is soooo reassuring! I agree still rather strange - must be a set of circumstances that conspired to enable the aphids to accelerate....my b. davidii lochinch is ok, but I will keep a close eye. Hopefully I will plant other varieties later this year. Come on sparrows...!  :)

I've often had similar damage on early foliage on buddleias. It's usually just aphids, or similar sap sucking insects. I cut it off and there's new growth which is fine.
That would be my initial approach on those distorted leaves. They don't succumb to pests/diseases easily  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thankyou @Fairygirl that is a relief to know. I hope I don't have this problem on my buddleia ever, but at least I will know what to do. I hope buddleia stock is not being chucked up and down the UK because of this!  :)

I rarely look at the buddleias other than when they get pruned back in early spring, or when I dead head. They're quite hard to kill...

  • I have a similar problem with my buddleia. Never seen it before and only just noticed it… but that’s because I don’t look!

  • Hi Folks, I have the same problem. I have 5, large established buddleia trees in my garden that have always looked beautiful. This year, all 5 (plus a seedling) all have bright lime spots on. I was convinced it was a virus, and I am still convinced it could be. I have never seen anything like it before. On closer inspection, there is some evidence of aphids, but I still think the aphids may have given them a virus, as that is how viruses spread. Weirdly, I have had aphids on Gaura and Hellbores this year, so maybe it is just an aphid thing, but my gut says they have been infected. Photos attached. What do you think?

Don’t know what causes that, but several people have said the same this year.
you have a beautiful ladybird larvæ there,  hopefully you’ll have more and they’ll gobble up all the aphids.

My 2 bushes have this. Never seen it before, and mine are 30 years old. No sign of aphids on it, so my guess is a virus. I only noticed it yesterday when I cut the lawn round it, but I'm sure it wasn't there 9 days ago when I last cut the grass. Think I'll leave them and see what happens. Don't want to cut back and spoil the flowering. I'm in Colchester Essex, so is it a local problem?
  • The same problem has appeared on my newly planted Buddleia so, while disappointed, I'm glad I'm not alone! So what is the consensus feeling please .. pick off the infected leaves, spray with ' something' ?? or ignore. I live in South Oxfordshire
