Another plant you could consider is Phormium. It's evergreen and comes in lots of different colour combinations. The best (and most tasteful ones!) are the green and white variegated varieties like Cream Delight and Tricolor, but there's lots of others, although these can be less hardy and need protection over winter. They will be happy in a large container for a while, needing the usual care of any containerised plant.
