Amelanchier transplant shock? Any hope?

    It’ll be simple enough to take a spit of soil out nearby (at the same distance from the wall) and just check how dry it is down there. 😊

    A friend has an amelanchier in his garden, put in about five years ago. He is not interested in gardening. Amazingly the tree is still alive - about five ft tall - surround by grass and weeds. I don't expect he will do any keep to help it. I am wanting to put a wide disc of weed membrane around it and wood chip over that (not near the trunk), to  keep off the competition and help it to grow. I was expecting it to be 10 ft tall by this point and would like to see it thrive.
