Plant ID request - Aster impersonator?

  • Thanks all!

I’m quite tolerant of small weeds, which have flowers.

This plant - I haven’t seen it anywhere else in my garden so I thought perhaps it was placed there purposely! It always comes back even when pulled out (I guess I need to dig it out properly!)

The roots really resemble my asters which are growing half a metre away, so I was always confused.  Whatever this is - it is right next to a rose bush; in a sheltered spot. It grows to perhaps 80cm and still doesn’t flower.  And it seems if I remember correctly, to get ‘narrow’ on the top like it’s waiting to develop buds - but it doesn’t! I can’t even remember 🙁 it’s in a south facing spot so it has loads of light.

If they are an aster they must be a different variety! The roots are practically the same….

@nutcutlet I will remove them but will try to do it properly!

It looks a bit like what my mum has always called Canterbury bells, which is a campanula but they do have nice little flowers. It looks a bit glossy for willowherb or solidago to me.
