Plant ID request - Aster impersonator?

Hello,

Can anyone identify the following?

When it starts growing it resembles an aster (well, the purple variety I have) but it gets bigger and it doesn’t flower (I think!) I keep on letting it grow and removing it when it’s tall…

It’s roots are similar to an asters… (slightly purple) and the leaves too but they are wider…

Many thanks

It reminds me of the leaves of my white phlox, but that will have flowers later on. Which reminds me, I want to Chelsea chop some of it.

Don't know then, sorry. Maybe leave it alone and see if it flowers this year. You could be removing it before it gets as far as flowering.

Bound to be a willowherb. They've been mugging me all year. They're really sneaky cuckoos. They sidle up to your dead plants and pose as what you've paid for 😡
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • That’s the issue! It looks fine early on but it very quickly gets spindly… dried out looking leaves… leaves further ‘apart’…

And basically looks like an overgrown weed! In my front garden 😑

It’s not goldenrod is it? That’s related to aster.

My neighbour has it and I pulled out about 20 of them last year. The leaves look similar.

Are the emerging flowers/stems lower down attached to it? If so, it's willowherb.
    That's what my money's on.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Looks like golden rod to me too @TheGreenMan but if not then my next guess is willowherb.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

It looks like an Aster to me, some flower very late. If it's weedy looking I'd have it out and plant something you like
