Many decades ago, a bird nested in the engine bay of my neighbours car. It flew in and out of the grille of his car, in the days when all cars had big grilles on the front. Even though he drove to work and back every day the birds managed to raise a brood. I can't remember what type of car he had, but the memory has stuck in my mind.
You often hear about robins, in particular, doing that @Balgay.Hill - they're not fussy about what they use, but they like going through a sheltered bit to reach their nest, so I expect that's why a car engine, with the grille you describe, is quite an attractive prospect. Sheds are definitely popular sites too @myclayjungle, for those reasons you describe. A little gap somewhere for access. It can be tricky if you spend the day outside with the door open, and they see an opportunity!
We’ve currently got a pair of collared doves nesting on top of our security light at the front of the house. I’ve switched it off so that it doesn’t disturb them on a night.
If I go out one of them normally comes out of the nest to watch me.
Their calls sound like they’re being played on a loudspeaker in the house.
Saw a rather nice and no doubt expensive boat moored on the Thames where a pair of young swans had decided to build their nest on the deck. Guess that put paid to the owners 'messing about on the river' for a month or so.
