I grow my lettuce in the shade, and we have a damp climate here, so lettuce doesn't bolt readily. This might be a small country compared to the US of A, but it doesn't mean we all have the same conditions. We do what works for us, our climates, and our sites, plus the time we have [ or want] to spend on it. Some people actually go to work, or have families and homes to look after, and believe it or not - other hobbies. Perhaps you need to do a bit of research yourself about our conditions before telling folk here what to do all the time, and more importantly - telling them how they're doing it all wrong. I don't recall seeing, or reading about, gardeners in historic gardens spending time building covers for lettuce either, but maybe I'm just not obsessed with things that happened 70 or 80 years ago though....
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@floralies Visit the UK ?? Heavens above - why would anyone want to visit the UK ? After all, we are ignorant, forgetful, can't space plants or grow veg/fruit, generally lousy gardeners, have a sense of humour, moved on since the 2 world wars, object to factory farming, the right to bear arms, etc. etc. I've probably missed off a few bits and pieces and obviously can't speak for the UK as a whole. I know we go "off topic" at times on here and why not but good old @wargarden really just doesn't have a clue what makes us tick and certainly doesn't do the US any favours by continually spouting such rubbish. A very sad person IMO but finding it difficult to have any sympathy with his obvious problems.
as for successive crops my friend Maranda just sent garden advice from Maine for prewinter crops for stick season. like Vermont Maine has 6 seasons:Spring, "Mud", Summer, Autumn, "Sticks" and Winter.
Am I guessing right, @war garden 572 , that 'sticks' is when all the leaves have fallen from the trees but the snow hasn't yet started ? I believe Vermont and Maine are the places to visit during the autumn to see the beautiful coulours.
Hang on a moment ! You wrote 'Autumn'. Isn't it called 'Fall' by North Americans, or does that vary from place to place (I've heard it's called a 'sidewalk' in some places but a 'pavement' in others, if Bill Bryson is to be believed that is).
Hail Bryson .... Hail Bryson .... All Hail Bill Bryson
When there's always biscuits in the tin, where's the fun in biscuits ?
