Tomato seeds have not germinated - can I do anything?

That's why I suggested using some of the ones you normally grow, if you have any.

I tried some seed squeezed out of bog standard plum toms from the supermarket, as I only had a few of the ones I normally have left. They germinated fine too in my own mix. I now have too many, but that's ok. I'll be pricking them out in the next day or two, but they're a fraction of the size they should be by this time.
    That's gardening!

  • Sorry I should have clarified - I usually get the other variety I usually grow as small plants from Homebase - I haven’t grown from seed previously - as I wasn’t sure I could.  I was determined this year to have a go!
  • The gro-sure compost had lots of small twigs and seemed to have lots and lots of ‘bits’ in it.

Had the same problem. Used used coffee grounds, if you have any, added to the compost on my second attempt which is very beneficial for the seedlings according to my search engine and is also working well with my chilli seedlings which was also a disaster first time around.

It would have helped to sieve it to make it more suitable for seed. That will have contributed to the  problem.

It's always a bit of an experiment when you start out with seed sowing.
I knew the basics when I started doing that, rather than buying a few plants - the same as you did, but it's all about timing and conditions, and back then - any MPC was absolutely fine for virtually any seed. That's where it's become trickier recently IMO.

My squished supermarket tomato seeds sprouted in a couple of days. I should have sown them earlier but forgot - maybe that was a good thing. No idea.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Its getting very late to sow tomato seeds now. I would get some plants. I usually sow tomato seeds inside in February.
