I have seen Clematis growing through many shrubs, but never a Buddleja. I don't know if that is because it wouldn't work, or not. It sounds odd to me, the Clematis wants feeding and lots of water, the Buddleja thrives on neglect.

I think the feed would encourage both @Loxley, but in any case, I don't know if it would work well. I've certainly grown clematis near buddleias, along with lots of other plants, and have had stems finding their way up the buddleia as a convenient support, but how well it would work if you actively do it, is anyone's guess. The dark buddleias I have get very big because the soil is hearty clay, and the biggest problem is reaching to deadhead, as I said earlier, even though they're hacked right back in early spring. Mine are used as part of the boundary 'hedge'. The soil condition is probably the biggest factor in getting success.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
