Clematis to grow through a large buddleia

amanda50amanda50 Posts: 16
Hi all, could anyone tell me which of the following clematis (if any) would be suitable for growing through a buddleia ? I have c. Asao; c Etoile Violette, c Taiga; c Cardinal Wyszynski; c Voluceau. Many thanks in anticipation.

@amanda50 I'm doubtful that a buddleia-clematis combo would work. Let's see what the other members of the forum think.

It would need to be a group 3 clematis so that it could be pruned right down each year in early spring at the same time as the buddleia. I'm not familiar with your varieties but Google will be able to tell you which groups they are, if you don't already know.

Thank you. Etoile Violette is group 3 according to google.

Sorry, Voluceau is also group 3

Then just check that the heights are compatible too. If the clematis grows faster than the buddleia, that might be a problem but you won't really know how they'll both grow in your conditions until you try it.
I'm assuming it's an established old buddleia that puts on 8 feet or more of growth each year not a small new one. If it's new, maybe wait until it's well established before adding a clematis.

Thank you, its an old established Buddleia, which we prune down to about 4 ft every spring and yes it grows fast and big as we keep it for screening. Ok apparently Voluceau grows to 9ft and Etoile Violette to 10ft so height shouldn't be a problem. Thank you for helping me to think this through.

Hi there, if it is compatible with pruning times, do you envisage any other problems? Grateful for your thoughts.

Hi there, I actually have four - two at opposite ends on a south facing wall which are purple and "royal red". Another one is in a south facing border and that one is called "Flower Power" which is a pinky mauve, and one on a north facing wall which is white. I am thinking the north facing one wouldn't be suitable for this type of clematis but not sure. I was mainly thinking of the south facing ones.

Etoile Violette is vigorous and will swamp your buddleia.  Mine produces more and more new stems every yeara nd grows far taller than the annual growth on a buddleia.

Voluceau only gets to about 3 metres so would be a better choice if you think the colour combo would work with your buddleia - https://clematisontheweb.org/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=589

You can look up your other clems on that site too.
