Has anyone tried / had any success with homemade garlic wash concoctions?
I think I brewed some up once but made the kitchen stink so haven't bothered again.

    Quite!

Do you mean garlic for preventing slugs? I think some folk use it for hostas, as they do get attacked so much, but I don't know how well it works. I'd have to be constantly applying it as it would get washed off too quickly.
I just gave up on hostas - less stressful  ;)

@Fairygirl - funny you should say that as only yesterday I decided I would plant the few potted Hostas we have in the ground out of the way. Less depressing than looking at lacey curtains all summer.
The wash properly was for Hostas now I think of it.

I have one which is reasonably resistant so I keep it, as it fills a space. It's not particularly exciting though. I think it got eaten a lot more than usual last year, but I just hack the manky leaves off and the other planting around it covers them.

  • I’ve found that with hostas you just have to go out nightly with a pot of salty water and remove them by hand. One or two slugs/snails will decimate the hostas in your garden !

That's the problem though @muckyhandsmike - I couldn't be ar*ed doing that every night. I'm usually asleep on the settee by about 9pm.  ;)
The problem I have is that very few other people garden in any serious way round here, so mine is the constant, attractive, free buffet for them. When I see them during the day they get snipped. The large snails get squished and left for the wasps.  :)

@Fairygirl - what is it about 9 pm and sofas? Do they have some hypnotic powers to send you into a Nanna Nap just when something half decent might be coming on the telly?
It does here I know that much.
  • oh yes the “nine pm syndrome” .. we are programmed to drop off then so that at bedtime we cannot get to sleep for worrying about slugs and snails ;)

Oh - I get back to sleep pretty easily once I get up and go to bed @muckyhandsmike ;)

    That's why I record anything that's on after 9pm @alfharris8.... :D
I'm much more of morning person.
