@Fairygirl I was always taught WE[west to east] A good Scottish word I think.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

WIP on a lot of fronts but thanks one and all for prior advice. Ended up digging all 13 x 3m out again, removed all the plants except the Chilean lantern tree, sprayed a small amount of the bank and put down weed membrane. I hate both weedkiller and membrane but was a necessary evil in this particular case. Lots more plants (divisions and bare roots mainly) to go in so will post update towards end of summer when hopefully will have a better idea of how things are going.

Really happy with this spot so far. Obviously spacings all wrong (it was a very wet summer and things exploded with growth) but a significant improvement in what was there before so thanks for the advice one and all.

Link below to a brief video of it now, wouldn't embed.

Oh, well done! Looks great. You've solved the problem yourself.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thanks @Busy-Lizzie! It was a load of work hauling things around but I think it'll really pay off in years to come and the pollinators absolutely love it. Still need to properly dig out and mortar in the brick edging but will get there in the end. Anyway, as always this forum was helpful in steering me and bit of education about the correct way to determine 'facing' always useful too  :D
