Sowing Carrots & Onions

The woman on G's World who sowed all her onions from seed was very interesting. I only watched it yesterday -  I think it's the first one of the new series, but it was the same programme as the one with the chap who had the National Collection of Astrantias . She certainly wasn't worried about sowing in trays and then transplanting them  :D
Might be worth watching @Sheps, if you've not seen it.

Could you put the carrots down lower or similar, to give them a bit of shade if you haven't got any other shading organised?

Hi @Fairygirl yes... I watched the same segment on GW and sowed my onions in the same way she does.

I have internal shading, my greenhouse curtains if you remember 😁 but they are only of use in the morning and afternoon, I could put up the external shading if needed. It's when the sun is end on at about midday that causes the issues I think.

More curtain wire and curtains needed me thinks 🤔

I've just moved the carrots as advised, they are now under the staging.

    Thanks for the Idea 👍

Hope that does the trick for now  :)

The carrots and onions are growing nicely, especially the onions.

If it wasn't going to be so cold at night I'd risk planting out the carrots, but it will be close to freezing tonight.

@Sheps, they're looking good, I'd let the carrots develop some more true leaves before planting outside. For the spring onions, I plant mine outside when they're 3 to 4" high , I plant in groups of around a dozen plants together spaced a few inches apart, it works for me because I then just dig up a group at a time.

Thanks @scroggin thanks for the advice, really looking forward to tasting the onions.

If you do disturb the roots of the carrots, you might get forked "comedy carrots" that wouldn't win any show prizes, but they'll still be edible.

Carrot envy here @Sheps - mine aren't even showing - they are either very shy or just playing silly carrots ;)  Salads doing well tho so hope yours are too.
