I have one big, bold rat in my garden. He's there because I feed the birds, and it would break my heart to stop. He comes out in broad daylight and climbs up the pole to the feeders... and today he was drinking from my wildlife pond....
I have exactly that - a rat that benefits from my bird feeder and bird bath. It is what it is. I am with @pansyface
If you want to stop ...feeding the birds for as long as it takes until you no longer see it for a couple of weeks at least. That is what most Pest Control people advise in the first instance....
I tried that - when I resumed feeding the birds after a month of withdrawal the rat was back.
It's not a great problem if you're in a rural setting, because rats are abundant and it's just one of those things, but in an urban or suburban one, rats are not a good addition to a garden because of their proximity to people, and therefore disease etc. Not to mention the damage if they then get into your house, as several people can testify to.... Incidentally - that article re the woman in Kilwinning. They discussed it yesterday on R2. The lady herself was on, but also a pest controller who reckoned it was rats not squirrels, because she disclosed the info that she was hearing them at night. She'd had another pest controller in who said it was squirrels, so that was why she believed it to be that. Due to that info re night time activity, I'd agree with the bloke who was on the item- rats, not squirrels. I'm surprised she wasn't seeing 'evidence' though, ie droppings. Smashing....
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
