My nepeta have nice leafy growth, still low down on the ground. One of them died I think — no new growth — but the others are doing ok. I plan to wait a couple of weeks before buying a replacement (the others are all still small and I only planted them last year so not planning to divide).

All my nepetas are beginning to sprout again but this has only happened in the past couple of weeks. The variety you are growing and where you live/garden can make a difference so it might be worth waiting a couple of weeks to see if your nepeta is truly dead or just being a bit lazy.

We have two Verbena Bons, one has lovely new growth near the base, the other one looks completely dead. No growth, no signs of life at all. That's another plant to look out for when we visit the garden centres as we love them as a feature plant at the back of a border.

@Songbird-2 I can’t imagine buying VB. I find them in every nook and cranny in the garden and pull them out as carefully as possible, pop them in water for about a week and then plant them out or give away. If you have the patience they root so easily from cuttings any time of the year. Strangely I found them impossible to germinate many years ago, bought 6 plug plants and now have an abundance of them. I do love them though and so do the bees.

... and now have an abundance of them.

This "abundance" you talk about @debs64, are they plants that are still protected in a greenhouse or polytunnel? Most people are talking about losses in the ground after this past winter. What part of the UK are you in by the way?

@LunarSea I am in the West Midlands in a suburban area. Not far from Birmingham and the Black Country. My VB grow outside, parent plants all doing well showing new growth and all through summer I find baby VBs growing in between paving slabs which I pot up and grow on.
I tend to have the plants dotted around in small clumps so I may have lost a few and not realised but most seem fine.

@debs. I did take some seeds from the VB last year and have sown them a few weeks ago. I'm pleased to say loads have come through and today, I potted on 20 of them! I haven't found any seedlings around the old VB or in the garden so goodness knows whats happened to the plant. Maybe hot summer and cold wet winter has seen it off. Anyway, I have plenty of new plants to go at now, thanks.

Like you I was constantly finding seedlings growing all through the previous season. Moved some, potted some on, left others where they were and all were doing fine last autumn. But very few have survived this past winter. It has happened before though and new nursery-grown plants are easy to come by and not too expensive.

You must have good soil and a favourable micro-climate @debs64 :)
