Catmint and verbena

Happy spring to everyone !!

Have a lot of summer annuals popping up in the garden however no life on the verbena and catmint. When should I expect first signs of growth?

I know it’s been a colder winter this year and unsure when they started popping up last year, I sure it was before now.

Thankful for any advise

I’ve had 2 years of my verbena bons but I don’t think they’ve made it this year. I think mine had signs of life by April last year. Wish I’d sown some seeds now but if I can’t see any seedlings near where they were then I will buy some more as I really love them.

My Verbena at my allotment plot had signs of life but that all seems to have faded. Shame as they’ve been in there a few years and been a lovely main feature.

At least they’re easy to grow.

My Verbena started producing new shoots near the base over winter, but have now stalled, temporarily I hope!  My Nepeta made an appearance a couple of weeks ago and are now actively moving on.

The only V. bons of mine that look as though they might have survived are the ones in pots, even a seedling I potted up into a 4" pot and left out all winter. All the large clumps in the ground look dead.

  • Don’t know if I should leave them a bit longer? When would you guys give up on them and buy new ?

My local  garden centres seem to get the first big delivery of perennials in April. Give your plants a couple more weeks until you can buy suitable replacements.

  • I bought 2 new Verbena plants for £5 from the wildflower section that was offered in February after my Verbena died this winter. I saw this week that they still have them in my garden centre.

In a milder winter tiny seedlings appear by the hundreds in my garden. After this cold winter I have about six plants that have overwintered, the seedlings won't appear probably until early May if at all. Go and buy more and suddenly they will pop up.
That's the problem. Even the tiny seedlings will flower but will be much smaller plants.
I have grown V Bon for fifteen years or more from one small plant. Before that they rarely overwintered at all.

My VB all looked dead last week but now they have little rosettes at the base and my catmint is romping away now it’s in the greenhouse where my cat can’t chew the new leaves so give it a bit longer I would say.

My nepeta is regrowing at some rate.

Sadly only one out of my five verbena seems to have any signs of life.

Luckily Morrisons had quite healthy sized pots of them for £3.50 so I’ve just bought three.
