    Hello,
I need to find an annual that will grow tall quickly as an effective screen for later in the summer summer and autumn. It needs to be an annual because I’m going to get rid of it in the autumn. It’s a very sheltered, sunny spot. Flowers would be nice, but not essential. I would have liked to grow cape gooseberry for the fruits as a bonus, but it’s too late to send for them now as the sowing time is almost over.
Not sure where you are located but it isn't too late to sow Physalis.  You've got a couple of weeks yet. If your local SM has the fruits  available, you can enjoy the fruit but save some of the seeds and sow fresh.  If you can give them the right conditions, you should just about be able to see some fruits come Autumn.
Not sure how high you need something for screening - I find the edible Physalis  ( P peruviana ) are more keen on spreading once they get to 3 or 4 feet. The ornamental  ( aka Chinese Lantern ) won't get much above a couple of foot
Whether either of these will provide the screening you require is a bit debateable but good luck anyway :)
