Annual screen

EmerionEmerion Posts: 599
Hello,
I need to find an annual that will grow tall quickly as an effective screen for later in the summer summer and autumn. It needs to be an annual because I’m going to get rid of it in the autumn. It’s a very sheltered, sunny spot. Flowers would be nice, but not essential. I would have liked to grow cape gooseberry for the fruits as a bonus, but it’s too late to send for them now as the sowing time is almost over.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

Nasturtiums but they'll need something to grow up.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Sunflowers. I’ve ruled them out because they don’t provide enough of a screen, but thanks

    Failure is always an option.

Morning glory planted out very close together in clumps. They need something to climb on but once they get going they do get to a grand height and they have fabulous flowers.
Hops is another great climber but it can take over but then not an annual.

Sweet peas might work if you can find some in the garden centre growing in pots ready to plant out. They'd also need something to climb up though.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    Great suggestions here.

If you go with a climber - consider Black-eyed Susan too.

I like Cosmos for height, but not really a ‘screen’.

My garden and I live in South Wales.
