Rose shrub suggestion please

Dilip_UKDilip_UK Posts: 114
I have a tea rose in a large pot in the back garden, it is Whiter Shade of Pale, I love it. This has inspired me to think about planting some more. I have a south facing front garden which I am working on at the moment. The location is S. London, the soil is loamy with good drainage, I am not sure of the PH but I think neutral. The front garden is mainly paved but have a small square area 3x3 foot mid garden, so will get plenty of sunlight.

I was thinking of planting a rose shrub. Looking for apricot/orange colour, scented, small to middle size bush. I was thinking of floribunda, repeat flowering. There are also issues about habit - upright or floppy, I've no idea which would be best in middle of a paved area. Would be good to have plenty of blossoms, kind of showcase in middle of a paved area.

When I looked online my mind just went fuzzy. I am new to roses and the variety is mind numbing. I did like Lady Hamilton but I gather can't get it any more. Also liked Fragrant Delight. I think I have narrowed what I am looking for, so hopefully make it easier, but there could be other issues which I should also consider, please help.

Welcome suggestions and ideas. Thank you so much in anticipation.

@dbhattuk There are some amazing rose growers on here @Marlorena and @Nollie to name just two of many. They have great knowledge that is always interesting, I never knew it was such a complex subject as you have found. I am sure they will be along to offer good advice.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

@GardenerSuze, thanks for the note. The subject is amazing as you say. Great - look forward to hearing from @Marlorena and @Nollie or anyone else happy to provide suggestions. Although I mentioned DA roses, I am just being indicative. I guess where to source roses is probably another story.

    Hi dbhattuk (and Suze 😊)

Yes it’s a great shame Lady Emma Hamilton is discontinued. I have Lady of Shallot which I also like very much. The fragrance is not as strong as LEH and it may be a little taller than you want. It is a super rose though and may look good as a centrepiece.

I don’t actually have that many roses in that colour range, at least not small to medium in size, but have a look at Just Joey, the right colour, compact and fragrant. I very nearly bought it as a standard tree rose last year..

I have newsflash. Bought it from Trevor White roses. Might be worth you taking a look, it's continuous flowering, upright habit and seems to be healthy enough.

@Nollie, awww thank you for the note. Will have a look at Lady of Shallot, I am looking 3-4 foot height. Also check out Just Joey. Looking for a upright bush, often seen bushes where branches are long and floppy, I guess the roses are heavy for the stems. I assume good pruning (which i need to learn) and letting the steams establish strength takes awhile. Thank you again.

@gjautos, that is a great news flash, I like it. Thank you so much. Will go visit the site.

Forgot to add, mountbatten especially is poker straight sturdy stems!
  • @dbhattuk - it isn't apricot/orange ... but ( if you like a whiter shade of pale which you already have) - then Chandos Beauty is beautifully scented and ( to my eyes anyway , not dissimilar bloom shape). peach/pale pink hybrid tea repeat flowering, I think healthier foliage than whiter shade of pale.  when I bought CB it said approx 3 ft height, i think is more 3-4 foot for me.
Kindness is always the right choice.

@dbhattuk This is Whisky Mac which has grown from bare root in January 2022. I planted it in a pot and it was in flower all last summer until late autumn. Can't remember whether it is scented. It grew to about 1 metre (from ground level in pot) but I am not sure what its final height will be. It is a hybrid tea. Looking forward to seeing your final choice in situ!
