Earthworms in potted plants

I have been decanting quite a few plants from pots. The pots have ranged in size and the larger ones @10-50 litres, all had worms in them. Generally a few medium-sized but at the bottom of each pot, near the drainage, there would be a really fat, long, worm! Almost as if these fat worms were acting as a sentry or guard! Is…
