Earthworms in potted plants

I have been decanting quite a few plants from pots. The pots have ranged in size and the larger ones @10-50 litres, all had worms in them. Generally a few medium-sized but at the bottom of each pot, near the drainage, there would be a really fat, long, worm! Almost as if these fat worms were acting as a sentry or guard! Is this usual? When I planted my plants into my garden soil, I kept the worms in the soil of their already chosen plants. Do some worms actively prefer to live in pots?

Yes, they seemed very at home! But the fat ones at the bottom of each pot - some kind of doorkeeper!  :open_mouth:

I always find some fat, juicy ones too. I don't mind them in outside pots but in inside pots is not at all encouraged.

Oh yes, why don't you encourage them? Is it on aesthetic grounds?

    It's called a sentry worm.

Oh right, just re-read that: ...inside as in... indoors! Ok, makes sense. I found an earthworm in my over-wintered aubretia potted plant last week when I re-potted/potted-on. The worm had fallen onto the table actually, it was lucky I went back and happened to see it! It had been no trouble all winter indoors, so the worm was potted-on too...
