@philippasmith2 - are the seeds old? I couldn't get any lettuce to germinate well a few years ago, and I think it was @Allotment Boy that said lettuce seed doesn't keep so well. I bought new seed, and bingo! - job done
@Fairygirl No - the seeds were new which was what flummoxed me somewhat. I've learned over the years that most Lettuce seeds have a rather short lifespan so if I sow stuff more than a couple of years old, I tend to be prepared that I may be on a loser. Last year's Red salad continued up until January when we ate the last lot !!
I didn't think you would be using rubbish stuff @philippasmith2, but just thought I'd check. Could it be the compost not suiting those or something? I can't get my tomatoes to germinate for love nor money this year - some are new seed, but some are ones I had, and that shouldn't make any difference as they last for years. I sowed some last week in my own mix so hopefully they'll be o
Well - I've stuck two little pots out in the growhouse @Sheps - so the challenge is on...
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Just checked them @Sheps - all fine. Not quite so cold last night. 4 degrees was the low. It's slightly warmer in there than the outside temp now [by a few degrees] but the overnight temps tend to be similar to the outdoor ones. By this time of year it warms up more quickly, even on a duller day though.
I wouldn't want to put stuff out there any sooner than about mid April because of that, unless it's hardy annuals - the sweet peas are fine. The indoor temps are more consistent, so it can come as a shock if you put them in there too soon, especially anything with fleshy foliage.

Good morning @Fairygirl I bet they are going to be ok, but then the temperatures are going to be much colder Mon / Tues night so fingers crossed for them.
I think mine might be able to shrug off the cold as they are getting really big.
I just need the rain to stop so I can crack on and plant them out.
Yes - plenty of cooler nights ahead, but they should be well enough adjusted by then, and will hopefully grow a little bit more too. Yours will be fine - you can always take those bigger leaves off [and eat them ] to prevent them getting bashed about.
We've had lovely weather this week ,which is always a bit unusual, but very welcome, at this time of year, but it's to be back to the norm later today. Such is life

Yes @Fairygirl the compost issue was the conclusion I came to as well. Most of the other stuff I've sown has germinated but a bit erratic and slow. The stupid thing is that some similar seeds have shot up and others just sit and sulk. I planted out various salads the other day in the raised bed - cloched - and they're doing OK. Unfortunately, my neighbour has just told me that the farmers he visits for his work say next week is going to be cold and wet here - silage time coming up so I suppose I should have foreseen that one Not exactly been a ravingly successful Spring so far for some things has it ? Well, apart from @Sheps lettuce of course
Yes - we're going back to wet cold again this coming week, plus frost level temps. The joys eh? I sowed some other little seeds of some half hardy plants -Rudbeckias and Marigolds, and they've all germinated, even in the growhouse. The Morning Glories in the house have all germinated, and the ones in the gr'house are starting to come through. They're all in my mix of old compost and grit. It's very frustrating that the toms are just not playing ball. Aye - yon @Sheps and his lettuce....he's a right show off.... Mine are growing - albeit very slowly, but the house is colder than normal, and I don't think I often sow lettuce through April anyway. We don't tend to eat much salad- y stuff at this time of year. Hot soup is more usual!

I'd read that a spacing of 8in was sufficient so roughly went with that, gave them a good watering and put the Veggiemesh in place.
Hi @Fairygirl how did the seedlings do in the colder temperatures?
