  • I do not envy you trying to keep your laurel under control in future years. Even if you keep it trimmed, the trunks quickly grow into substantial thick trunks.

    I agree Joyce,  and when you keep them trimmed you expose the branches.

    Just one final question: is it better for me to pull off dead looking leaves to "tell the plant" to grow more leaves, or should I just let them drop off naturally?

    They will drop leaves naturally. When you prune that can reveal more dead leaves further down the stems that haven't seen the sun.
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
