Threat to Barndale Gardens

There are plans to operate a solar farm next to Barnsdale Gardens. If this goes ahead it will result in its closure. Nick Hamilton has asked for as much support as possible in having the solar farm resited.

    It’s a big farm, half a mile x half a mile.

why would the solar farm result in the closing of the Gardens?

Sorry but I would be supporting the solar farm.
We have a few round here and they are not as obtrusive or noisy as you might think.

When I have visited Barnsdale I have never noticed the fields behind the gardens. Hedgerows block the view, if I remember correctly. As such, I don’t think the solar farm will be especially detrimental to the visitor experience.

However for the Hamilton household it will be very different. Their grand house has an uninterrupted view over fields, admittedly, quite flat fields and not Rutland’s finest landscape. If the solar farm goes ahead, 10’ high panels will cover the two fields (approx half a mile) behind the house and extend leftwards for nearly three quarters of a mile. The big house adjacent to Barnsdale Gardens is similarly impacted.

If it were to have a view of fields behind my house replaced by banks of solar panels I would not be happy. Who would be?

I think Ben probably worked out what is going on. This is about the Hamilton family's private views (and impact on property value etc). It's not really going to impact visitor experience to the gardens that much if at all.

A much bigger concern, is high quality agricultural land, being sold off for solar power, because it is worth more that way.
Surely we have learnt the importance of food security in the last year?

  • I don't know the area or the quality of the land but often they still graze animals on these solar farms as part of the upkeep. Obviously if it's good crop farming land it's a problem but for poor quality land solar farms can make it more productive.
