Redesigning our back garden

  • A fab recommendation @Liriodendron. It has a similar look to the red-barked dogwood I've been eyeing up. Very helpful!
  • I've created an updated plan thanks to all the suggestions and spending this morning doing a bit of research on plants that might be suitable in the different parts of the garden. I suspect it's a bit overcrowded in places and I need to spend some time breaking it down into manageable steps.

I think we need to start with getting the boundary marked out and maybe using canes to get a sense of if we've got too much or too little planned. Then we can start digging the border, getting the paving in and the section for compost. After that I think we'll get some of the bigger trees/shrubs and go from there. Should give us time to bolster our garden fund too.

This is what I'm thinking of now, although I've already made some changes since I took the photo... so many ideas!

Be careful with Vinca Major, it can take over!
I hope we'll see photos in the future.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • @Busy-Lizzie - sounds like it will fit in nicely with our cranesbill which has roots everywhere (front and back!) 😂 I'm thinking I could replace it with hosta, heuchera or epimedium.

Definitely will be back with progress pics. I really enjoy the threads with updates over the months/years (@newprojectgarden is my favourite). It will be nice to have my own

Are the fences yours or the neighbours?
By the matching paint on the fences looks like it's theirs, as legally you are not allowed to paint a fence that's not yours, even if you think by doing so you are protecting/preserving the wood.

Ah yes I see the back and right are theirs. So the left one is not theirs but painted in same paint I presume with permission from neighbours.

@M33R4 Yes our neighbour to the left was happy for us to paint the fence a colour of our choosing
  • We've made steady progress this past month - largely due to getting rained off nearly every weekend. The rain wasn't all bad as it gave chance for mooching at the GC, using the RHS plant finder and drawing up a more detailed planting plan.

This weekend weather was better and I've made a start painting the fence. I was inspired by @zugenie's thread and am using the same paint. I'm really happy with the colour, I think the plants will 'pop' against it.

Marking out the border in real life was incredibly useful. We made some adjustments to our paper plan. We're waiting for a landscaper to come and quote for the corner patio and the back right.

All moving in the right direction and excited to watch the transformation!
